Vu-An Foster’s journey at George Washington University represents more than the pursuit of another degree. It marks a new chapter in the evolution of Life After 2 Losses and in her work as a public health leader.

What began from deeply personal experiences of pregnancy loss has grown into an organization committed to transforming lived experience into advocacy, education, systems change, and policy influence. Through Life After 2 Losses, Vu-An has worked to ensure that the experiences of families are not simply heard, but used to inform how systems respond, how programs are designed, and how policies are shaped.

The Next Chapter: George Washington University

In a field where only approximately 1% of public health professionals go on to achieve the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) designation, Vu-An was admitted as a recruited leader to the prestigious George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health.

​

As a recipient of one of the program’s top-tier scholarships, she is being trained at the No. 11 ranked public health institution in the United States, the only school of public health situated at the epicenter of federal policy in Washington, D.C.

​

GW is globally recognized for training world-class leaders to solve complex public health challenges. Through her doctoral training in Leadership and Practice, Vu-An is strengthening the research, leadership, and policy expertise necessary to expand the impact of the work she has already spent years building.

​

This journey represents an opportunity to bring together her lived experience, years of public health practice, organizational leadership, advocacy, and policy work with rigorous doctoral training designed to prepare leaders to influence systems at the highest levels.

Vu-An’s doctoral journey is not separate from the future of Life After 2 Losses. It is an investment in its next chapter.

The knowledge, relationships, research, leadership development, and policy experience gained through GW will strengthen LA2L’s ability to translate the experiences of families into evidence-informed practice, systems change, and policy.

As Vu-An’s work continues to evolve, so does the organization’s capacity to move beyond responding to inequities and toward helping shape the systems and policies capable of preventing them.

This next chapter positions Life After 2 Losses to continue growing from an organization born from lived experience into an increasingly influential voice within maternal and infant health, public health practice, and policy.

From New Jersey to Washington, D.C.

Life After 2 Losses was born from lived experience, but its vision has never stopped there.

Vu-An has spent years bringing the voices and experiences of families into spaces where decisions are made. Her work has evolved from direct support and advocacy to partnerships, systems change, and state-level maternal and infant health policy work in New Jersey.

​

Her doctoral training in Washington, D.C. represents an opportunity to build upon that foundation and deepen the connection between community voice, lived expertise, research, and public policy.

The next chapter is about taking what has been learned through families, communities, and state-level systems and positioning those lessons to inform conversations at an even broader level.

It is the continuation of a journey from loss to lived expertise, from lived expertise to advocacy, from advocacy to systems change, and from systems change to policy leadership.

Looking Forward

GW is preparing Vu-An for the next level of her public health leadership. Upon completion of her doctoral training, Vu-An intends to emerge as an even stronger nationally recognized public health leader, distinguished by rigorous academic training, an authentic voice rooted in lived experience, and transformative leadership that bridges the gap between healing, policy, and equity.

As Vu-An enters this next chapter, Life After 2 Losses enters it with her.
